Upcoming Events at the Morris Book Shop

Lexington Loves Mountains

Saturday, February 11 from Noon-5:00 pm:

As part of "Lexington Loves Mountains," the Morris Book Shop and Kentuckians for the Commonwealth are hosting their second annual letter-writing day from noon to 5:00 pm.

We're inviting folks to stop in throughout the day and write (or sign) letters to their legislators and/or submit letters to the editor in an effort to raise awareness of mountaintop removal and other destructive practices of the coal industry. Joining us throughout the day to provide inspiration will be Erik Reece, George Ella Lyon, Jason Howard, Eric Scott Sutherland, Whitney Baker, music from A Girl Named Earl, and other special guests. Please join us and make your voice heard!

Friday, February 17 at 7:00 pm: Beloved author Silas House returns to the Morris Book Shop to read and sign his new novel for all ages, Same Sun Here. Cowritten with Neela Vaswani, Same Sun Here tells the tale of an Indian immigrant girl in New York City and a Kentucky coal miner’s son finding strength and perspective by sharing their true selves across the miles.

"Even better than reading a refreshingly honest story by one talented writer is reading one by two such writers."—Publishers Weekly, starred review

Same Sun Here
The Sisters

Saturday, February 18 at 2:00 pm: Kentucky author Nancy Jensen will sign her bestselling debut novel, The Sisters. Set in Kentucky across the twentieth century, this novel tells the story of two sisters, the choices made in their youth, and the consequences that reverberate for generations.

"Nancy Jensen has the natural storyteller's ability to command attention, but with sophisticated psychological understanding and beautifully crafted writing. The Sisters is a needed novel that will become a very popular classic."Sena Jeter Naslund, author of Ahab's Wife

Wednesday, February 22 at 6:30 pm: University of Kentucky Professors Ellen Riggle and Sharon Rostosky will sign their new book, A Positive View of LGBTQ: Embracing Identity and Cultivating Well-Being. This book includes stories that people shared when asked the simple but novel question, “What is positive about having a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer identity?” The answers focus on themes such as the benefits of personal authenticity and insights, having stronger relationships with family and friends, flexibility in gender expression and roles, increased compassion for others, fighting for social justice, and a sense of community belonging. The book includes activities to inspire readers to cultivate their own positive narratives and strengths.

A Positive View of LGBTQ

Saturday, February 25 at 2:00 pm: Institute 193 founder Phillip March Jones signs his new photographic collection, Points of Departure: Roadside Memorial Polaroids.

From the author: "Roadside memorials mark geographical points of departure in a landscape that is generally devoid of real human interaction or activity. We pass them at sixty miles an hour, sometimes glancing back, but are never afforded the time to actually see them. This project is about slowing down."

Points of Departure
Transformed

Saturday, March 3 at 2:00 pm: Longtime Lexington resident William McAtee reads & signs Transformed: A White Mississippi Pastor's Journey into Civil Rights and Beyond. This book follows Reverend McAtee's early career as a minister in rural Mississippi in the racially turbulent 1960's and McAtee's own "activation" as a force for progressive change.

Saturdays at 11:00 am: Join us every Saturday morning for Big Ears Story Hour!

You've asked for it; now we've got it! Bookseller and children's author Celeste Lewis will entertain and educate kids of all ages with stories & activities.
